The Truth Behind the Alcohol Façade
Beware of what you see on social media.
I posted this picture four years ago. Looks lovely, doesn’t it? A beer at dusk, overlooking god’s creation.
What you don’t see is the several beers I almost certainly had before this one, and perhaps a few that would follow.
What you don’t see is the harrowing hangover I was likely sporting all day while I waited for beer-o-clock to begin. And the mental energy drain that followed me every second of the day while I went through the motions of my day — practically ‘phoning it in’ on my life — till it was time to drink again.
What you don’t see is the tremendous guilt and shame I sat with, as I tried to recall what I did and said the night before. Trying to recall the specifics of an argument with my spouse. Or looking on my phone with dread for any questionable social media or drunken texts.
Do not let the idyllic photo fool you. It’s still a picture of an addictive drug in front of a beautiful mountainscape. And as with anything on social media, the full story shows a much uglier truth of a life nearly stolen by alcohol…
